Summer 2006 Walking Tours
The Delaware County Historical Society (DCHS), along with eight local historical societies and
the Delaware County Transportation Management Association (DCTMA), held a series of walking tours
during the summer of 2006. These tours were well attended, highlighting various historical sites
throughout the county. Each was held on a Friday night, many including tour guides in period
costume, all with guides well versed in the history of the particular area covered by the tour.
July Walking Tours were held in the historic Wayne business district with guides from the Radnor
Historical Society; the village of Rockdale with guides from the Aston Township Historical Society;
the Lazaretto and Governor Printz Park with guides from the Tinicum Township Historic Society; and
Haveford's 1883 school house, 1832 Methodist church and cemetery, the Narbeth farmhouse, and the site
of the Battle of Llanerch Crossing led by the Haverford Historical Society.
August Walking Tours were held at the Chester Heights Camp Meeting with guides from the Chester
Heights Campmeeting Association; Darby's Quaker meetinghouse, free library, historic mill sites, and
Mt. Zion AME led by the Darby Borough Historical and Preservation Society; Marcus Hook home of Edward
Teach Thatch (aka Blackbeard the Pirate) and the original St. Martin's Church and burial ground guided
by the Chichester-Marcus Hook Historical Society; and several of Chester's historic sites including the
1724 Courthouse and the original Penn's Landing with tour guides from the Chester Historic Preservation
Committee.
